“The call to adventure is always followed by the fear of leaving the known.” – Joseph Campbell
Two clients I am seeing at the moment who have experienced traumatic events in their lives are in the midst of radical transformation – that takes guts! They have examined the pain, humiliation, loss of dignity, control and power that often accompanies trauma and are reinventing themselves. Both talk of a period of intense confusion about who they truly are, now that they have dropped the strategies they’ve used to survive and are choosing authenticity instead. We’ve described it as being like the birth process: painful in some ways, but also inevitable and life-serving. I am awed by their courage.
